Second half comeback ensures RMIT stay top of the table

After a week off for the Bye round, RMIT needed a win to ensure they stayed top of the league. The last time these two sides met RMIT defeated Meadow Park SC 4-0. However, RMIT go into this match with a much different squad as the injury crisis continues.

It was a very poor start by the Redbacks, a Meadow Park corner was poorly cleared to the edge of the box, where the opposition captain met it with a sweet volley under no pressure to put the visitors 1-0 up.

To make matters worse, RMIT midfielder Mike Jones suffered a foot injury on the 25th minute mark and the manager was forced into an early substitution. The remainder of the half was uneventful and both teams struggled to create any clear cut chances.

RMIT started the second half at very high intensity. Within minutes a long ball to William Barkley was held up on the right wing, Andres Castano made a driving run down the flank and his cross looped over the keeper for his first goal for RMIT.

Moments later some excellent work by Barkley again but this time down the left beating a man and whipping a delightful cross into the centre, Jol Latcham beat his marker and placed a strong header beyond the Meadow Park keeper.

RMIT were now in full control of the fixture. Substitute Daniel Jones was involved right away when he picked out Latcham alone in the opposition box with a throw in, Latcham controlled and passed across the box for oncoming Sam Wood to blast in from close range.

In the final stages of the matches, Latcham tackled a tiring Meadow Park defender and finished a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. 4-1 to the Redbacks in an inspired second half.

Next week RMIT play Thornbury FC at home whilst Greenvale SC have a bye round before their clash. A win there would restore RMIT’s 3 points at the top of the table.
