RMIT succumb to their first defeat of the season

RMIT lined up to face bottom of the table Keon Park with an ever growing list of injuries and absentees. Five changes to the line-up as Paul Kozinski and Santiago Yeppes Gallo were handed their first team debut after impressive performances in the Reserves league.

The game started with Keon keeping possession but it was RMIT who had the first chance. Hard work by Piers Brelsford on the left saw him nip the ball of the CB and found his strike partner Jol Latcham just inside the area. The Keon Park keeper made a good save down low at his near post.

A contentious decision moments later by the linesman saw a Keon Park player through on goal from what appeared to be an offside position. The striker had time to take on the keeper and slot one home from close range into an empty net. RMIT were behind for only the second time this season.

RMIT responded right away with one of their own, after the redbacks won the ball high up the field Brelsford played Daniel Jones through who finished first time with his left into the bottom corner.

The second half saw much of the same as Keon Park dominated possession and RMIT creating more of the clear cut chances. RMIT could have been 2-1 up when Brelsford played Jones through but he hit the upright from a tight angle.

Mat Kelly showed strong hands to keep out a thunderous strike and up the other end Latcham’s effort was kept out by the keeper. RMIT upped a gear and looked likely to get the second when against the run of play Keon made it 2-1. Keon Park won a free kick outside the area which was driven into the top corner beyond a diving Kelly.

RMIT looked for a late equaliser but their keeper pulled off a fantastic save with 2 minutes to go to deny Latcham from close range.

A disappointing afternoon for the Redbacks against a rejuvenated Keon Park team following key mid season signings. RMIT are back at home next week against and look to bounce back against Moreland Eagles SC.
