RMIT FC Progress to FFA Cup Round 2

Melton Phoenix FC: 1

Match Report

Juan Camillo Alzate gets off the mark on his competitive debut to set RMIT on their way into the second Round of the Westfield FFA Cup.

The match started in favour of the away side as the Phoenix piled on the pressure early on. Some strong defensive interventions by Giordano Dalla Vecchia helped shore up ship in the opening moments and within 6 mins the Redbacks hit on the counter.

Following some crisp interchanges with the front men the ball eventually found it’s way to Victor Peraza who set up fellow debutant Camillo with an inch perfect through ball that was controlled well by Camillo and placed in the far right corner beyond the Keeper. One nil to the RMIT against the run of play.

The remainder of the first half saw RMIT keep their structure and restrict the Phoenix to no real chances. A good stop by Rory Keenan from a powerful phoenix free kick on the halfway mark ensured RMIT went into halftime at 1-0.

The start of the second half was much more open with both teams having chances to score. RMIT had two big chances before the Phoenix eventually broke the stubborn RMIT defence to slot away a neat finish beyond Keenan. The RMIT defence fell asleep for a split second as they disputed an offside and the Melton striker broke through and finished into the bottom corner.

RMIT reorganised and looked to restore their lead. The Phoenix keeper pulled off a great diving save to keep Piers Brelsford’s powerful volley out. RMIT kept pushing forward and eventually found their second goal. Peraza held up the ball well out on the right and a powerful overlapping run by Daniel Jones was picked out by Peraza. Jones whipped in a strong cross to the penalty area which was deflected in by the Phoenix defender. The calls for offside were ignored by the Match Official and the goal was allowed to stand.

The Phoenix nearly found an immediate response but Keenan saved well from a one on one. The ball found its way to Michael Jones who placed a powerful drive from outside the area but the keeper tipped it onto the post. RMIT managed to hold out for the final few mins to secure passage into round 2.
