Late Latcham goal wins the derby
The last time Melbourne Uni SC and RMIT had met it ended in a convincing 3 nil victory for the redbacks. Fast forward to Round 12 and Melbourne Uni had hit a good run of form and occupied third spot only 4 points from 2nd which would secure them automatic promotion.
It’s a game that meant a lot for both teams and it played out to be a tetchy affair. Both teams had an equal share of the possession and RMIT got lucky with their first goal. David O’Reilly stepped up to take a free kick near the halfway line. His cross was met at the near post by a Melbourne Uni defender but his clearance looped over the goalkeeper into his own net.
Melbourne Uni SC responded immediately with a set piece of their own. A well delivered corner found a Melbourne Uni player at the near post who made no mistake from close range.
The rest of the match was played in the midfield and Melbourne Uni looked more likely to get a winner. RMIT showed some resolute defending which has been a trademark of this side in the 2016 campaign.
As Melbourne Uni tired RMIT bought on Andres Castano to sit in front of the back four and allow the RMIT midfield to be more adventurous going forward. RMIT pressured Melbourne Uni deep in their half until eventually the defenders made a mistake.
With 5 minutes to go the Melbourne Uni SC center back took too long to clear and Piers Brelsford pounced on the indecisiveness and won the ball back on the edge of the box. He held it off well and laid it on a platter for Jol Latcham to produce a well executed curler from 18 yards out.
RMIT held on to the one goal lead to ensure the gap at the top of the table remained 3 points as well as distance themselves from their Swanston Street Rivals with a 10 point lead.
