Late Comeback Books RMIT FC Into 4th Round of FFA Cup
RMIT FC: 3
Bayside Argonauts FC: 2
Substitute Chris Smith scores in extra time to complete the RMIT comeback to earn the Redbacks a spot in the FFA cup 4th round for the first time in the clubs history.
Bayside Argonauts dominated the chances in the opening 15 minutes of play. Joe Cowen and Alistair Mitchell in defense dealt with a number of crosses to take the pressure off as the Argonauts looked to continue exploiting the diagonal aerial passes.
Against the run of play, RMIT got the ball into the box and a Sam Wood backheel found William Barkley who instinctively finished into the bottom corner. RMIT 1 – 0 with their first shot of the match.
The goal galvanised the Redbacks and they asserted their presences in the middle of the park. Some smart link up play between Wood, Peraza and Castano freed up Alzate who unleashed a thunderous strike that was well saved by the Argonauts keeper.
Chances were limited for the remainder of the half and RMIT went into the break with a goal advantage.
Following the break RMIT defended well and absorbed all the Bayside pressure. A long ball was chased down by Barclay who beat the keeper out of his box before laying it off to Jones from a tight angle. Jones’s curled effort narrowly missed the target as Bayside were looking to get back in the game.
The equaliser finally came when Mitchell brought down the Argonauts winger in the box and the subsequent penalty kick was cooly converted in the 78th minute. Bayside had all the momentum now as they looked for a winner. In the 89th minute they eventually found the back of the net when a misplaced clearance from Cowen sneaked in at the near post.
It looked like game over and in the final seconds of the match RMIT had a free kick on the edge of the Bayside penalty box. Up stepped Peraza who curled the ball over the wall and into the bottom corner of the goals to equalise. RMIT had just forced extra time with the final kick of the game and Bayside looked deflated.
RMIT started extra time the brighter side, and eventually found the goal that would prove to be the winner. A Peraza corner kick was volleyed into the goals by substitute Chris Smith. 3-2 to the Redbacks.
RMIT had a number of chances to increase the lead as Bayside pushed bodies forward to find an equaliser. In the end the score remained 3-2 and RMIT had earned a position in the cup 4th round for the first time in their history.
