Latcham brace ensures RMIT take home all 3 points
Two goals from Jol Latcham, a Mike Jones free kick and Piers Brelsford scores late on to extended his goal scoring streak to 6 matches make it a happy afternoon for RMIT.
Thornbury Athletic FC will be left frustrated after not capitalising on their dominant first half. RMIT Keeper Danny Graham was in inspired form keeping them out on multiple occasions to make sure the scores remained 0-0 at the break.
It wasn’t long after the restart that RMIT took the lead. The first goal came in the 47th minute courtesy of a Latcham finish at the near post following an in-swinging corner from Nick Barwell.
RMIT FC grew in confidence but Thornbury Athletic still looked to mount a comeback. It wasn’t until the 59th minute that the pressure was lifted. Binyam Desta was bought down on the edge of the box and Jones stepped up to curl home a powerful shot to make it 2-0.
The Redbacks fashioned a number of chances and Brelsford ensured the result was beyond doubt in the 86th minute. Latcham found Brelsford at the back post and his shot was excellently blocked by the Athletic defender. However, Brelsford was having the final say when he reacted first to poke home into an empty.
Deep into stoppage time Ahmed Zwawy played a long ball to Latcham who still had plenty to do. A solo run past 3 defenders and a powerful finish beyond the keeper gave him his second and RMIT’s 4th for the afternoon.
Reservoir’s loss at home to Moreland FC means RMIT now go top of the table with a game in hand over their rivals. RMIT host Greenvale United SC at home next weekend and a win could see them go 5 points clear at the top.
