Jones screamer set’s up RMIT’s fourth consecutive victory
A cloudy afternoon at Wallace Reserves saw RMIT FC take on Moreland Eagles FC in a game where both teams looked to build on their perfect starts to the season.
Inside the first minute of the game RMIT could have been ahead when Jerrit Kloster found Jol Latcham on the edge of the box but the Eagles keeper covered his angles well to make it difficult for the striker.
Michael Jones set the tone for the reminder of the match with a venomous strike that flew into the top corner from 20 yards out. The Eagles right midfielder was caught on the ball and a strong challenge from Jones gave him a yard of space to put the Redbacks ahead in spectacular fashion.
It didn’t take long for RMIT’s top scorer Piers Brelsford to get in on the act with a crisp volley into the bottom corner in the 25th minute. A delightful cross from Stefan Pachernegg was met at the edge of the box by Brelsford who just can not stop scoring at the minute. 2-0 to RMIT but it did not seem to calm the heated affair.
A number of off the ball incidents saw numerous Yellow Cards dished out by the referee and it wasn’t until the 40th minute that the visitors got the goal that would settle the game.
Nick Barwell’s long throw found Brelsford in the area who met it with a spectacular overhead kick. The keeper shifted across to make the save but Sam Wood’s timing was impeccable to deflect it away from the keeper into the empty net for his first goal of the season.
Moreland headed a consolation goal in the 43rd minute from a corner but Badawy’s men had done enough to see out the half comfortably.
The second half proved to be less eventful and it wasn’t until the 81st minute when a failed clearance from the Eagles was pounced on by the inform Brelsford for his second of the evening and RMIT’s fourth.
A very solid team defensive performance yet again and RMIT are now sitting top of the table going into their Bye weekend.
