Jones hat trick to mark his 50th appearance for the club
Mitchell Rangers made the long journey to the Redback’s Poplar Fortress. Both teams sat at opposite ends of the table but RMIT were wary of the visitors after a hard fought 2-0 win in the return fixture.
RMIT looked to make a mark on the game early on but for some lacklustre finishing in front of goals. In the 33rd minute Michael Jones started of the scoring with a well placed finish from the edge of the box from a Piers Brelsford pass.
Right on half time an excellent passing move found David O’Reilly out wide on the left. His cross was met by Jol Latcham who sent the home side into the break 2 for the good.
RMIT needed to score another goal to put the result beyond doubt and it came in the 61st minute thanks to a driven cross from Daniel Jones which was finished by Brelsford at the far post.
The Rangers lost a man to a second yellow in the 80th minute and the floodgates were well and truly opened.
RMIT managed to score 4 times in the space of 8 minutes. The first came after a goalmouth scramble which Sam Wood smashed home from close range. M. Jones then added a second with a solo run and a powerful finish at the far post. Jones then completed his hat trick in the 91st minute following a ball over the top from O’Reilly which was finished on the volley. Jol got his second of the game from the restart calmly slotting the ball under the keeper in the 92nd minute.
A big win to increase RMIT’s goal difference and to make sure they remain on top of the ladder as all the top 4 teams got 3 points on the day.
A visit to Keon Park is next for the Redbacks as they push on for promotion to State League 4.
