RMIT extend their lead at the top of the table after an intense affair

RMIT FC came into round 8 against second placed opposition Greenvale United SC with a chance to go 5 points clear at the top of the table. Both teams were undefeated in their first 7 outings and the game was set up to be an enthralling one. RMIT battled hard and got the win following second half strikes from Piers Brelsford and Jol Latcham.

A very intense first half saw Greenvale United SC with the lion’s share of possession. They came close to taking the lead in the 10th minute but a lobbed shot from the center of the pitch hit the post and went out for a goal kick.

Moments later an altercation between United’s front man and Ahmed Zwawy ended in a sending off for the Greenvale player. Greenvale continued to pile on the pressure, especially from set pieces, but Danny Graham was assertive in the area and was first to every cross.

A mis kicked clearance put the Greenvale striker through on goal and having beaten Graham, United were once again denied by the post.

The teams went into the break level but even with a man down Greenvale looked the stronger side.

RMIT came out in the second half and looked to dominate the play. An early clearance by Graham found Brelsford between two defenders. Inform Brelsford reacted first and chipped the ball over the oncoming keeper. The pressure was lifted and RMIT were now in control.

The Redbacks played the ball around well and looked comfortable in possession against the 10 man United. Zwawy and Sam Wood combined on the right hand side with some intricate play before Wood beat 3 men and found Brelsford. Brelsford put his strike partner through and Latcham’s composed finished dented any hopes of a Greenvale come back.

Wood had a chance to make it 3-0 but was thwarted by the cross bar and a Latcham free kick ended in a similar fate. Nevertheless, it was a successful outing for the Redbacks and this victory puts them in pole position going into another tough test against Reservoir Yetis on the 28th of May.
